"Guest Spotlight: We Band of Mothers"

Today is Monday and time for another guest spotlight. Today's guest is Marianne, who blogs @We Band of MothersMarianne Walsh is a columnist, wife, and mother from Chicago, Illinois.  Her writing appears in the magazine Chicago Parent, in the new book, Epic Mom: Failing Every Daya Little Bit More Than You, and in her signature blog We Band ofMothers   Marianne has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, on WGN-Radio 720, and on BlogHer.  She was voted one of the Top 25 Funny Mom Blogs for 2012.
Marianne holds a BA and an MA in English, and currently spends most of her free time wiping pee off toilet seats. I asked her to tell us a little about her blog. She says, "We Band of Mothers is a celebration of the funny and oft-forgotten moments of motherhood.  For me, the blog keeps life in perspective.  I never would have predicted the limitless source material that is gifted to you the moment they wipe off your goopy baby and pronounce you “mom.”  It is truly every writer’s dream come true.
The blog also reinforces some of the commonality in parenting.  I highlight the struggles and insecurities most mothers face.  Too many voices dictate “the appropriate” way to raise children.  I encourage everyone to forget the experts and come laugh with me instead.  But bring some liquor. "Her inspiration for blogging, "I don’t know if I’d call it “inspiration” as much as “desperation.”  As someone who once dashed off endless amounts of copy before lunchtime, I started getting writer’s block while handling simple thank-you notes.  I love being a stay-at-home mom, but my brain was turning to mush and mayonnaise.  I began writing a holiday newsletter for kicks, and that eventually morphed into the blog.  The blog morphed into writing for Chicago Parent Magazine, and that morphed into the book, Epic Mom  She says her blogging goals for 2013 is: "I want to lose 15 pounds through blogging.  Imagine the book deals I’d get then." Do you have plans to participate in this year’s April A-Z Blogging Challenge? "Whenever there are prompts or challenges, I fail.  The thought of getting all the way to the letter Q or X and then not being able to write about quadruplets or x-ray vision really depresses me.  My creative style is such that I sit down at my computer around midnight and the stuff just pours out.  My blog kind of writes itself.   The alphabet and I have a sorted past.  Why, just look at it.  It comes in alphabetical order.  Clearly a Type-A personality if you ask me.  I think the alphabet could use some yoga classes and possibly Xanax."   Do tell us a little about your book Epic Mom,
"This one is easy.  I will now plagiarize myself courtesy of our back-cover snippet:
Epic Mom is the world's preeminent book on flawed motherhood. Award-winning humorists Julie R. Harrison (Mom's Had a Rough Day) and Marianne Walsh (columnist for Chicago Parent Magazine) offer an honest glimpse into life behind the minivan doors. In a series of anecdotes about the colossal blunders of parenting, this book celebrates those who choose laughter first. And liquor second. And third." So what do you think? Have you read Epic Mom?  I hope that you will check out her blog and her book. Many, many thanks to Marianne for stopping by today to tell us about her blog, her book and a little about herself. Hoping you will stop by and visit her blog and hoping you will check out her book! Again a big thanks to Marianne for stopping by!
